Puerto Asís is a Colombian municipality in the department of the Putumayo. It is located on the west bank of the Putumayo river, downstream from the mouth of the Guamúez River, 75 km by road to the south of (Cardinal) Mocoa. It is one of the department's largest cities with a population of nearly 70,000.

History

Puerto Asís was founded on May 3, 1912 by Capuchins Missionaries, father Estanislao de las Cortes and brother Hidelfonso de Tulcán. The city bears the name of Saint Francis's birthplace Assisi in Italy.

In order to reaffirm the sovereignty of Colombia in these territories that were contested by Peru, the government installed special programs in the region which contributed to the town's growth.

By April 1914, the village had a population of more than 200; however, this figure does not include children, women, or Native Americans. The population continued to steadily increase. The mission founded a large boarding school for the education of the local indigenous population and the children of the colonists. Later that same year, The Franciscan Sisters took charge of the education in the village.

The city celebrates Carnival each year in January. Beginning with a Tyre Regatta on January 3rd in the Putumayo River. This has become a major tourist attraction, and was proposed to the Guinness Book of World Records as a contender for the worlds largest tyre swimming race.

Culture

On January 4th it is aimed at the carnival as the day multicolored; the 5th is the day of blacks; the 6th is the day of whites and carnivals are closed as is typical with the coronation of the carnival queen on the 7th of January.

In addition Celebrate the birthday of its founding on May 3rd. Where is the meeting of colonies and cultural and sports events organized by the municipal administration.

Puerto Asis fair has livestock and which has historically been recognized as town rancher. These are made fair in August and has horseback riding, livestock exhibition of the best estates department (Putumayo) and logically the reign of livestock.
